I started painting almost 28 years ago, when I was an architecture student. After graduating and working for some time in the UK, I took 3 months off from architecture to paint for an exhibition in Connecticut. This was a major turning point in my professional focus. I felt what it was like to paint every day. Fast forward, my education and background in architecture have a huge impact on the work I do.
I naturally gravitate toward order and structure. I am interested in the ways people organize their environments; the choice they make about the color in their lives, or even for their front door. I am obsessed with color and light, and deeply drawn to painting the shade and shadows made by these. I work hard at trying to recreate the atmosphere of a place or the aura made by select combinations of colors. Color theory, composition, and architectural drawing play a part in my works.
Moving to Minnesota in 2014, I started to focus on figures in spaces, color combinations of circles and, an exploration into the 'place' of Santorini Island in Greece. The Santorini work has been a departure for me. It is more abstract, but still reminds me of the emotions felt in the environment there. This work has not been exhibited in the public realm yet.
I hope you find something here that speaks to you. People often comment that I have so many genres of paintings. I see them as collections of ideas. When I get through one collection, I am inspired to start another. Sometimes it is painting, other times it may be building collages, or textiles, or something completely new! There is an architectural connection that brings the themes together.
In 2021 I released a new collection of experimental watercolors. This work manipulates pigment, water, air, natural, and manmade recycled objects to represent my response to conditions in the Minnesota landscape where my home and studio thrived from 2014 - 2021.
Blessed to be able to do what I love; I am honored to have painted a commission for the Crown Estate and HRH the Queen of England in 2005. My work has been featured in Real Simple, British Vogue, Vogue, House and Garden, and Artist's and Illustrators Magazines. I have exhibited widely in the USA and UK and my pieces are included in private and corporate collections worldwide.
